LeRoy 'Ace' Gutowsky may not be a name familiar to many modern fans of the game, but for a long time he was a megastar. His career began at the Portsmouth Spartans, who later relocated to Detroit and became the Lions. He starred for them for six years, from 1932 to 1938, during which time he set both the Detroit Lions' career and single-season rushing records – records which stood until the 1960s.

As we mark his passing on this day, 4 December 1976, let’s take a moment to find out a bit more about this outstanding athlete.

1. A star of two eras

Gutowsky’s career began with the Portsmouth Spartans, one of the NFL’s original teams. When the Spartans relocated to Detroit and became the Lions in 1934, Gutowsky seamlessly transitioned to help establish the franchise as a competitive force. He became the Lions’ first rushing star, setting the foundation for a franchise rich in running back history. Gutowsky ended his career in New York where he played a single season for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

2. Record-setting rusher

Ace Gutowsky held both the Detroit Lions' career and single season rushing records for over two decades. His single-season record of 827 rushing yards in 1936 was unmatched until the 1960s. Known for his grit and determination, Gutowsky was able to thrive in an era where the running game was the cornerstone of offence.

3. Consistency and versatility

During his six-year stint with the Lions (1932–1938), Gutowsky consistently ranked among the league’s top rushers. More than just a power runner, he was a reliable receiver and blocker, making him one of the most versatile players of his time. His all-around skillset set him apart from many of his contemporaries.

4. Trailblazer for Jewish athletes

Gutowsky was one of the few Jewish players in the NFL during the 1930s, paving the way for greater representation in professional football. His success challenged stereotypes and inspired athletes from diverse backgrounds to pursue the sport. Not just Jewish, Gutowsky was born to immigrant parents with roots that were a blend of Ukrainian and German.

5. A forgotten legend

Though his records have since been eclipsed, Ace Gutowsky’s impact on the Lions and the NFL remains significant. He retired as one of the league’s all-time leading rushers. His contributions helped popularize professional football during its formative years, and his legacy endures as a pioneer of the sport. At the time of his retirement, Gutowsky was ranked alongside Clarke Hinkle and Bronko Nagurski as the greatest fullbacks ever to play professional football.

6. Life after football

After calling time on his football career Gutowsky continued to live the American dream. He became a champion Bridge player and was awarded a 'life master' ranking by the American Contract Bridge Association. He was also extraordinarily successful in business, working alongside his father, Assaph, in the family oil business.
