Rookie quarterback update given as head coach says top three pick has ‘a lot to work on’NFL
This year’s crop of six first-round rookie quarterbacks have been getting down to work.

New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo says his rookie quarterback Drake Maye still has ‘a lot to work on’ following his team’s rookie minicamp.

The former North Carolina product was selected with the third overall pick of last month’s NFL Draft as Mayo and his coaching staff pin their hopes on the rookie quarterback at the start of this new regime for the Pats following Bill Belichick’s exit.

Maye was present at the team’s rookie minicamp this weekend, with Mayo quick to point out that there is plenty of work to be done in the coming weeks and months.

"Look, he has a lot to work on. A lot to work on. But I have no doubt that he will put the time in," Mayo told the team’s website

"You didn't see him out here yesterday, but he was here all night trying to get on the same page as everyone else."

Maye sent a similar message, insisting that he is ready to put the work in this offseason.

"It's been good, I think kind of the first day just feeling it out and just getting more and more reps," Maye added. "That's all something new takes -- getting more reps at it. … I felt pretty good out there today, so just have to keep working."

"As the quarterback, you have to know what everybody is doing on the field in the offense. It takes extra time, extra drawing up, extra questions.

"I'm just trying to get to know it myself, but also get to know the other guys around me. Get them with me."

The Patriots will find out their first opponent of the 2024 season on Wednesday when the NFL releases the full season schedule.
