Former Chiefs and 49ers quarterback Alex Smith has been discussing the Super Bowl match-up

This year’s Super Bowl will bring about a rematch of the big game in 2020, as the San Francisco 49ers will be looking for revenge on the Kansas City Chiefs.

Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs to a 31-20 comeback victory in Super Bowl LIV in Miami, but with plenty of roster churn for both sides, this will be a very different game.

One player who knows the two franchises better than most is Alex Smith, the former 49ers number one overall draft pick who spent eight years with the Niners before a 2013 trade to the Chiefs, where he helped mentor Mahomes through his rookie season in 2017, before rounding out his career in Washington.

Smith discussed the upcoming match-up with ESPN’s Adam Schefter and fears that defensive deficiencies mean that the only way the 49ers will be victorious is if they are to outgun the Chiefs in a shootout.

“This 49ers defense doesn’t do a lot,” Smith said. “They don’t present a lot of volume. I think… they’re going to be in for it. The only chance I think the Niners have to win is a little bit of a shootout, and again, this Chiefs defense just continues to elevate their game.”
