The San Francisco 49ers got one step away from the Super Bowl last season, and on Sunday they start their journey to get at least that far again as they open their 2023 NFL season with a visit to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The 49ers were among the league's best in 2022, putting together a 13-4 regular-season record before winning their first two playoff games. While they stumbled in the NFC Championship, the emergence of quarterback Brock Purdy gave San Francisco something to build on ahead of the new campaign.
As for the Steelers, they missed out on the playoffs last season despite holding a winning record. If Pittsburgh can go better than .500 again this year, the Steelers will become the first AFC team in history to post 20 consecutive winning seasons.
