The Seattle Seahawks are reportedly set to hire Mike Macdonald as their new head coach, with the Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator set to become the youngest head coach in the NFL.
The 36-year-old will succeed 72-year-old Pete Carroll, who stood down in Seattle at the end of the season after 14 campaigns in charge of the Seahawks, as per the NFL Network.
Macdonald was in charge of the NFL’s top-ranked defense this year, as the Ravens earned the top seed in the AFC before losing the Championship game to the Kansas City Chiefs.
He is set to become the ninth head coach in franchise history and will pip the recently hired New England head coach Jerod Mayo, 37, to the title of the youngest in the league.
According to NFL Network, he is signing a six-year deal in Seattle.
Macdonald spent two years at the Ravens, joining John Harbaugh’s coaching staff from his brother Jim’s University of Michigan program in 2022, leading the Ravens defense to the number three scoring defense ranking in his first year, and then to the top ranking scoring defense this season.
His appointment will leave just one head coaching vacancy in the league, at the Washington Commanders. Since the end of the regular season, new head coaches have been hired by the Atlanta Falcons (Raheem Morris), Carolina Panthers (Dave Canles), Los Angeles Chargers (Jim Harbaugh), Tennessee Titans (Brian Callahan), Las Vegas Raiders (Antonio Pierce), and the New England Patriot (Jerod Mayo).
