The AFC West is, by far, the most competitive division in the NFL this year. All four teams head into Sunday with five wins, giving very little wiggle room between the top and bottom of the group.
For this week's "Sunday Night Football," two of the teams — the Kansas City Chiefs and Las Vegas Raiders — will go head-to-head in Nevada for a massively important game.
Part of the reason for the parity in the AFC West is the surprising decline of the Chiefs, who have looked anything but the dominant force they been over the previous several seasons with Patrick Mahomes taking the snaps. Kansas City has fallen from legitimate Super Bowl contender to playoff hopeful in a matter of weeks, and at 5-4 the team sits in third place in the division.
Directly above the Chiefs in the standings are the Raiders (5-3), who are coming off a 23-16 loss to the New York Giants in Week 9 and need to claim victory against the visitors to keep from slipping down the rankings.
To that end, the Raiders are approaching Sunday's game as if it was a playoff matchup.
“You want to build a team that owns the AFC West, year in and year out,” Raiders defensive coordinator Gus Bradley said. “So any time you have a divisional opponent it’s even that much more important. But I think we try to treat every game as a championship opportunity. You try to keep them in that mindset to avoid the highs and the lows. This is just another opportunity.”
