One more game of the NFL season remains as the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs get set to do battle in Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas.
After getting past the Detroit Lions and Baltimore Ravens respectively in last weekend’s Championship games, the two Super Bowl finalists have a fortnight to prepare for the big game and get as healthy as they can possibly be.
Here is a look at the injury situation for each side.
Kansas City Chiefs injuries
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has a number of injury issues to contend with before the February 11 showdown.
Defensive end Charles Omenihu tore his ACL in the win over the Ravens and will not face his former team in the Super Bowl. Omenihu’s seven sacks saw him rank third for the Chiefs this season, despite him sitting out the first six games of the season through suspension.
Joe Thuney missed out against Baltimore with a pectoral injury and the All Pro guard is currently a doubt for the Super Bowl.
Linebacker Willie Gay also sat out the Ravens win with a neck injury, but given he was a game-time decision for that one, hopes will be high that he can play in Las Vegas.
Then there is the somewhat bizarre case of Kadarius Toney, who claimed that he was not actually injured, despite being out since Week 15, listed as having ankle and hip injuries. Reid confirmed on Monday that the wide receiver has been injured, but is expected to return.
San Francisco 49ers injuries
The 49ers currently have a much more favourable injury list than the Chiefs, with a host of players picking up minor knocks during the win over Detroit, but not expected to miss out against the Chiefs.
George Kittle hurt his toe, but is day-to-day, Ambry Thomas left the NFC Championship game with an ankle injury but is also expected to be fit, as is Christian McCaffrey who took a big hit on his final carry on Sunday.
