Tennessee Titans fire Mike Vrabel: Three names that could replace him as head coach

Tennessee Titans fire Mike Vrabel: Three names that could replace him as head coachGetty

The Tennessee Titans sent shockwaves throughout the NFL on Tuesday when they fired head coach Mike Vrabel after six seasons in Nashville.

Vrabel is a former AP NFL coach of the year and a three-time Super Bowl champion from his days as a player, and he is widely regarded as one of the top head coaches in the league.

With such big shoes to fill, the Titans will be looking for the best possible candidate to take over the team.

Here are three names that could potentially be on Tennessee's shortlist.

Bobby Slowik

The first-year offensive co-ordinator with the Houston Texans is a talent that should be among those at the top of the Titans list.

Slowik has over a decade in various coaching roles throughout the NFL but this season's work with rookie quarterback CJ Stroud and a Texans offense that helped the team qualify for the playoffs for the first time this decade will have surely turned some heads around the league.

Ben Johnson

Another new-ish offensive co-ordinator with many years of coaching experience, Johnson helped the Detroit Lions transform from one of the worst teams in the NFL into NFC North champions and the No. 3 seed in the conference.

The Titans could do worse than to give the 37-year-old his first head coaching gig.

Jerod Mayo

With Vrabel's extensive links to the New England Patriots and the rumours that he could replace Bill Belichick in Foxboro, could one of Belichick's assistants head the other way?

Mayo's a more off-the-wall choice than the others on this list, but he has a similar pedigree as a player to Vrabel and spent nearly five years as the Pats' inside linebackers coach.
