The biggest names are off the board but plenty of effective free agents remain on the market.

As is usually the case, it’s been a breathless first week of NFL free agency.

We’ve seen quarterback movement headlined by Kirk Cousins’ move from the Minnesota Vikings to the Atlanta Falcons, while a host of running backs have been on the move.

On the other side of the ball, the likes of Christian Wilkins and Danielle Hunter have enjoyed big paydays, with the majority of the premium free agents all having secured new teams.

But with teams continuing to trim their rosters, several recognisable names are still looking for their next challenge.

Here is a look at the best remaining available players as the second week of free agency gets underway.

Mike Williams - wide receiver

After his 2023 season was curtailed by an ACL tear suffered in Week 3, the LA Chargers let their former first-round draft pick go last week.

Receivers have been in short supply in free agency this year and Williams should still have enough in the tank to be a productive player this season.

Jadeveon Clowney - edge

Another player with multiple stops in recent years - there’s a theme developing here - and another veteran player who could be an excellent short-term option. Enjoyed a 9.5-sack season in Baltimore last year, equalling the best season of his ten-year career so far.

Justin Simmons - safety

At 30 years old, Simmons’ age is why he is still on this list, but he would be able to do a job at many teams. His experience and leadership skills should see that he gets a decent landing spot soon.

Stephon Gilmore - cornerback

A former NFL Defensive Player of the Year, Gilmore is looking for a fifth team in five years, but would be a smart signing for any team looking for an instant, short-term boost to their secondary.

Julian Blackmon - safety

Had an Achilles injury not derailed his 2022 season he would not likely be on this list. Registered a career-best 88 tackles last season and could be a bargain pick-up for a team needing help in their secondary.

Trent Brown - offensive tackle

Durability questions and a habit of drawing the wrong kind of attention to himself mean that teams have been slow to look at the veteran tackle, who has plenty of ability.

Calais Campbell - defensive tackle

Still going after 16 productive seasons in the NFL, Campbell’s 2023 campaign saw him make 17 starts for the Falcons without a dip in his play. One more year?

Odell Beckham Jr - wide receiver

Despite all the injuries, OBJ still has plenty to offer and after saying his goodbyes to the Ravens on social media, he looks intent on finding a new home.

Ryan Tannehill - quarterback

His days are a starter are behind him now, but the former Miami and Tennessee QB can still be a very effective backup in the league.

Kyle Van Noy - edge

Another player that has bounced around teams in the past few years, but had a very effective season with Baltimore on a dirt-cheap contract last season. Can certainly fill a gap for someone.

Laken Tomlinson - guard

Failed to meet expectations at the Jets who landed him on a big contract from the 49ers in 2022, but his durability and experience should ensure he gets snapped up before too long.
