A look at what fans can prepare in the kitchen to get that authentic culinary Super Bowl experience

For those NFL fans not fortunate enough to be out in Las Vegas this weekend, a domestic Super Bowl party will have to do.

For US-based fans that will mean a Sunday night get-together with a bunch of pals, while supporters in the UK may have to settle for a less-sociable gathering of night owls who have booked Monday off work.

Either way, you’re going to need food. Here is a look at some classic Super Bowl culinary options to keep you going during what could well be an epic showdown between the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs…

The classics

We’ll start with some classics of the Super Bowl feasting genre. Is it even a Super Bowl party if you’re not eating Buffalo chicken wings with a blue cheese dip? They should be the first item on anyone’s shopping list this weekend.

Nachos are another staple and you’ll want to get them loaded up with cheese, salsa, guacamole, sour cream, jalapenos and maybe even a bit of fried chorizo.

If you’re entertaining a number of people you’ll also want some mini slider burgers or hot dogs with the usual gamut of toppings and sauces to go with them.

Pizza is never a bad choice for a gathering, and a pot of chili is a great way to go on a winter evening.

You can then tick the sweet tooth box with a selection of brownies, cookies, doughnuts or cupcakes.

For Kansas City Chiefs fans

If you’re a Chiefs fan, then maybe go all in and embrace their local culinary scene. Known for their barbecue expertise, it might be a bit of a stretch to fire up the grill on a cold February evening, but if you can slow cook some beef brisket, ribs, pulled pork or burnt ends and smother them in barbecue sauce, you’ll get full marks for committing to the cause.

For San Francisco 49ers fans

Niners fans may struggle more to replicate their team’s local cuisine, but sourdough bread will work with a number of dishes, even if clam chowder is trickier to whip up.
Their iconic Dungeness crab may also be tricky to get your hands on, so more realistic options may be to replicate the city’s famous burritos or the dim sum offerings from San Francisco’s Chinatown.

Beverages

Finally, what should you drink? While alcohol will appeal to many people, for those watching outside the US, it may not help when you’re trying to keep your eyes open during the second half at 2.45am. You’ll also want to avoid a post-energy drink comedown, so mocktails and soda could be the way to go.
