You have to go back to Oct. 28, 2018, to find the last game in which the Washington Football Team earned a win over the New York Giants.
The NFC East rivals have faced each other often — 178 times, in fact — so the nearly three-year winning streak for the Giants is a significant one. But while the results have all gone New York's way in recent years, the last three meetings have been closer than should be comfortable for the Giants.
In the 2020 season, the Giants won by one and three points, respectively, and also required overtime to earn their "W" in a Christmastime thriller in 2019.
In other words, while the Giants have come out on top five straight times against Washington, the games are usually despite the results.
On "Thursday Night Football," the team from Washington looks to reverse the trend against their divisional foes, and they'll have to do so with Taylor Heinicke taking the snaps as starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is out with a hip injury.
The 28-year-old is ready for the spotlight of being an NFL starter.
“Something I’ve been dreaming about my whole life, being a starting quarterback in the NFL, and here we are,” Heinicke told reporters, via The Athletic. “I really try and take it one day at a time, one meeting at a time, one play at a time. I feel like if I just live in the moment, everything else will take care of itself.”
Heinicke's got the support of his teammates, with defensive end Chase Young telling reporters "[Heinicke] could start on any other team in the league," but the best way for the pivot to prove he truly belongs is to lead Washington to a victory over the team that has consistently found ways to win whenever these two sides meet.
