After spending two years as the Washington Football Team, Wednesday morning saw the franchise announce that its new name will be the Washington Commanders.
Team president Jason Wright and head coach Ron Rivera said that during the 20-month naming process that they looked to incoporate a military element because of the connection to the nation's capital.
"As an organization, we are excited to rally and rise together as one under our new identity while paying homage to our local roots and what it means to represent the nation's capital," team owner Dan Snyder said in a statement.
"As we kick-off our 90th season, it is important for our organization and fans to pay tribute to our past traditions, history, legacy and the greats that came before us.
"We continue to honor and represent the Burgundy & Gold while forging a pathway to a new era in Washington.
"Today may mark the first day for the Washington Commanders, but we are and always will be Washington."
Washington's search for a new name began in July 2020 followping protests across the United States following the murder of George Floyd in Minnesota.
Snyder then began to have discussions with NFL comissioner Rodger about possibly changing the name which was considered by some as racist and offensive.
As a result of the re-brand, the franchise has ditched any Native American imagery and references, but will keep the burgundy and gold colours as shown on their social media accounts.
