It's a rematch of Super Bowl LV, but tonight's Kansas City Chiefs vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers game will take on a decidedly more somber feeling.
The Tampa area was hit hard by Hurricane Ian last week, prompting questions about whether tonight's game would be able to be played at Raymond James Stadium as scheduled. The NFL confirmed on Thursday that the game would go ahead as planned, and Bucs quarterback Tom Brady told reporters last week that he hopes the game could serve as a rallying point.
“I always feel like sports have brought people together over a long period of time,” Brady said. “Watching different adversities — whether it was 9/11, whether that was [Hurricane] Katrina — sports have an amazing way of kind of healing wounds and bringing people together and bringing communities together, something to cheer for, a common interest, a common good.”
On the field, tonight could be the last time fans see Brady vs. Patrick Mahomes. Every time the duo meets, talk turns to the proverbial passing of the torch between the two men. With Brady not quite ready to give up his role as the biggest name in the NFL, Mahomes hopes to emulate the 45-year-old's longevity while still maintaining the high level that makes the two quarterbacks among the best the league have ever seen.
"It's special to see the things that he's done in this league, the way he's able to change the position [with] longevity and great success," Mahomes said. "That's the crazy part. I mean, if you look at his career, there's never been really a down year. He's always been great and had a great season and found ways to get even better. He's done stuff off the field that hasn't impacted him on the field but still made his legacy even greater.''
