The "will he or won't he" has been settled — Patrick Mahomes will be playing for the Kansas City Chiefs in Sunday's AFC Championship game against the Buffalo Bills.
Mahomes confirmed the news himself on Friday, ending a week of speculation on the superstar quarterback's availability for this weekend's playoff game. Of course, the issue was Mahomes' apparent concussion suffered during the Chiefs' 22-17 victory over the Cleveland Browns in last week's divisional round.
Mahomes had to successfully navigate the NFL's five-step concussion protocol before receiving clearance, with the 25-year-old telling reporters on Friday that he's good to go vs. the Bills.
"The week has been a bunch of testing, a bunch of different things, to make sure I'm good to go and there's no lingering effects and things like that," Mahomes said, as reported by AP. "Everything has been good. I went through Everything; three or four different doctors have said everything is looking good."
With Mahomes' participation confirmed, the focus turns to the upcoming QB battle between the Chiefs pivot and Buffalo's Josh Allen. The Bills' quarterback has been a revelation this season, and he also has a playoff victory against another member of the NFL's new guard as he led Buffalo to a dominant 17-3 win over reigning NFL MVP Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens last week.
As good as the Ravens are, however, the Chiefs pose different problems. In addition to being the defending Super Bowl champions, the Chiefs already boast a victory over the Bills this season — a 26-17 result earned on Oct. 19. Mahomes outduelled Allen (225 yards/two TDs vs. 122 yards/two TDs and one INT) in that matchup, and the young Bills pivot will need to increase his output if the team from Western New York is to have a chance on Sunday.
