Not that anyone had doubts, but Patrick Mahomes proved that he's still on top of the game when he led the Kansas City Chiefs to a dominant Week 1 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.
The quarterback put up gigantic numbers, throwing for 360 yards on 30/39 passing, with five touchdown passes and zero interceptions. Mahomes' brilliance led Kansas City to a 44-21 win, firmly re-establishing the team as a favourite in the AFC.
For Mahomes, it's all about raising the bar and continuing to push himself and his team to greater heights.
“I mean, you always feel like you have more to prove,” Mahomes said. “I promise, Tom Brady's feeling like he has more to prove, and I think that just comes with any sport, any competitor. If you're not getting better, you're getting worse. And they build you up to tear you down, and you got to kind of know that. For me, it's all about, ‘How can I make myself better?’ Not what other people say. ‘How can I make myself better so we can go out there and win football games?’”
Mahomes and the Chiefs have a chance to get even better against the Chargers tonight, with LA having also claimed a Week 1 victory. It wasn't quite the display that the Chiefs put on, as the Chargers grabbed a sizable first-half lead and held off a late rally to defeat the Las Vegas Raiders, 24-19.
Either way, both teams are coming into tonight's game with confidence.
