DAZN explains the role of a defensive end.

The defensive end performs a certain role on an NFL team's defense.

In the modern era, defensive ends are sometimes considered a hybird of the linebacker and defensive lineman position.

But what is a defensive end and what is their role during a game? DAZN explains.

What is a defensive end?

A defensive end is a player who is positioned on the line of scrimmage, and is lined up on the outside of each offensive tackle.

Defensive ends are usually more athletic than defensive tackles, but weaker in coverage compared to inside linebackers.

What are the responsibilities of a defensive end?

Running plays

When defending against the run, the defensive end looks to make sure that the run play does not get outside of them.

The defensive end is tasked with keeping the play on the inside where there will be more help from teammates.

Passing plays

A defensive end will look to get past blockers fast enough to sack the quarterback.

If the defensive end is able to put enough pressure on the quarterback, it will make the job of the secondary much easier.
