Is tonight the night that the Denver Broncos finally put things together with Russell Wilson taking the snaps?
The Broncos (2-3) visit the Los Angeles Chargers (3-2) on "Monday Night Football" tonight coming off a measley nine-point output in last week's 12-9 overtime loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Despite acquiring Wilson, Denver's put up more than 20 points just once in five games so far in a frustrating start to the 2022 season.
Now, they have to face a division rival while still trying to figure out the offense. It's not an optimal position to be in.
“We obviously thought it was going to be further along than it is right now, but it’s not,” Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett told The Denver Post . “We have to be able to look at everything, learn from it, correct it and make sure we’re getting everybody on the same page to be successful.”
It starts with Wilson, who came to Denver after a stellar 10-year run with the Seattle Seahawks. The 33-year-old quarterback is learning the harsh lesson that success doesn't automatically translate to a new team, but Chargers head coach Brandon Staley feels that Wilson has it within him to help raise the Broncos' level.
“He’s the same quarterback. That player is still there,” Staley said. “That competitor is still there. … He’s just new to the team. This isn’t uncommon to the quarterback position.”
Despite his kind words, Staley likely won't be too sad if Wilson and the Broncos take a little longer to figure things out.
