What happened to the NFL alternative?

American Football is gearing up for his showpiece game of the season, when the Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers at Super Bowl LVIII on February 11.

The game is the biggest event in the sport's calendar, but the NFL isn't the only option when it comes to watching the sport, thanks to the XFL.

When did XFL start?

The current XFL is the third incarnation of the league, having been first established for one season in 2001 before a failed relaunch in 2020. The current reboot began in 2023.

When did the XFL come back?

Former WWE owner Vince McMahon created the original XFL in 2001 in a joint venture with NBC, as they looked to take advantage of the desire for football after the Super Bowl and season ends. The XFL was sold as an 'alternative' to the NFL and was akin to content seen on WWE TV, with a rougher and more 'violent' edge to the games. However, after a strong start, interest quickly dwindled thanks to the quality of the games and only lasted one season.

McMahon kept hold of the trademark and attempted a relaunch in 2020, but it only lasted one season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Two years later, new owners Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson,  Dany Garcia and Gerry Cardinale of RedBird Capital took over the league and are seen as an alternative to the NFL.

Is the XFL still going?

Yes and no. The XFL announced in September 2023 that it was merging with the USFL to form the United Football League, with the first season beginning on March 30.
