The first Monday Night Football game of 2024 could be a classic.

The first wave of free agency is done, the draft is in the books and the next stop in the NFL offseason is the schedule release.

Each of the league’s 32 franchises will soon know exactly how the road to Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans will be plotted out, with the full fixture list being released on Wednesday, May 15.

But ahead of the full announcement, the NFL have revealed some choice early games - including a mouthwatering Week 1 Monday Night Football clash.

Who is playing in the first Monday Night Football game of 2024?

The San Francisco 49ers will host the New York Jets in the Week 1 Monday Night Football clash.

The match should see the return of Aaron Rodgers to the Jets line-up after the veteran quarterback tore his Achilles on his debut when the Jets played in the 2023 Monday Night Football opener. The injury happened on the Jets’ fourth offensive play from scrimmage and saw Rodgers ruled out for the season.

It’s also a return to San Francisco for Jets head coach Robert Saleh, who was previously Kyle Shahanan’s defensive coordinator in the Bay Area.

For the 49ers, it’s a chance to show that they intend to contend for the Super Bowl again, after losing out in overtime to the Kansas City Chiefs in February’s Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas.

When is the first Monday Night Football game of 2024?

The 2024 season’s first Monday Night Football contest takes place on Monday, September 9 and is a 8:20 p.m. ET / 1:20 a.m. UK kick-off.
