Bellator MMA president Scott Coker recently told DAZN News that he was going to wait to see if the company was going to hold its three scheduled events in May amidst the COVID-19 outbreak.
Well, the promotion didn't wait long, deciding the health and safety of its fighters and staff is the only way to go. On Monday, Bellator postponed its Bellator 242 on May 9 in San Jose, Bellator Europe 8 on May 16 in London and Bellator 243 because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. ESPN first reported the announcement.
"Due to the ongoing safety concerns surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak, as well as current federal, state and local government mandates, Bellator MMA officials today have announced that three upcoming live events scheduled for May have been postponed," the promotion said in a statement. "The organization will continue to monitor the situation closely and fully intends to reschedule the events as soon as possible. As always, the health and safety of our athletes, fans, partners, and staff remains our top priority. We appreciate the understanding and patience of everyone involved during this incredibly difficult time."
Bellator 242 was set to be headlined by current two-division world champion Ryan Bader defending the light heavyweight title against Vadim Nemkov and Gegard Mousasi meeting welterweight titlist Douglas Lima for the vacant middleweight belt. Bellator Europe 8 had a headliner of James Gallagher against Cal Ellenor. Bellator 243 was scheduled to mark the promotional debut of Liz Carmouche, as she was slated to take on Mandy Bohm.
Refunds for tickets to those events will be available at their original point of purchase.
The next event for the company is supposed to be Bellator 244 on Saturday, June 6, from the Wintrust Arena in Chicago.
The main event marks a rematch between Michael Chandler and Benson Henderson, with the Featherweight World Grand Prix continuing.
