Battered and bloody, Glover Teixeira laid his gloves down inside the Octagon at the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Saturday night.
The 43-year-old veteran had just been dominated by a younger, sharper Jamahal Hill in their light heavyweight title fight to headline UFC 283 and Teixeira endured enough abuse to call it the end to his Hall of Fame-bound mixed martial arts career.
"In reality, I think I'm too tough for my own good, too tough for my own health," Teixeira said through an interpreter after the loss. "I can't keep up anymore. I'm going to focus my energy on Alex Pereira. He's going to keep his (middleweight) belt for a while and then go up to light heavyweight. It's an honor to put the gloves down on the same night as 'Shogun.'
The MMA warrior ends his career with a 33-9 record, having become the second oldest champion in UFC history back in 2021 after upsetting Jan Błachowicz via second-round submission (rear-naked choke) to claim the light heavyweight strap.
Over the course of his legendary career, Teixeira defeated the likes of Quinton Jackson, Ryan Bader, Rashad Evans, Anthony Smith and Thiago Santos to name a few.
As aforementioned, Teixeira announced his retirement on the same night as 41-year-old Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (27-14-1) who was knocked out by Ihor Potieria during the UFC 283 prelims.
