Kamaru Usman lines up opponent with unique fighting style for possible bout

Kamaru Usman lines up opponent with unique fighting style for possible boutDAZN

Kamaru Usman had five defenses of the UFC welterweight world championship over a two-year span, before losing the title and subsequent rematch to Leon Edwards.

But as the former champ looks at the division, there's one fighter who Usman believes would make sense for a possible bout soon and that's none other than Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson.

"I've done everything there is to do. The only guy that, to be honest, that even make sense right now is 'Wonderboy,' cause he needs an opponent," Usman told TMZ Sports on Tuesday. "Wonderboy's been around for so long, and he's just that name to where it's always a good fight."

Usman (20-3), currently ranked the No. 1 contender to the welterweight title, had entertained a fight with fourth-ranked Khamzat Chimaev but he's set to take on Paulo Costa in October.

That's all the more reason why Usman feels like testing his skills against Thompson, who has one of the more unique fighting styles, would be a natural move.

"His style is very, very difficult to fight," Usman conceded. "He's just one of those names, he's in my era, that I never really got to fight."

Thompson was supposed to fight Michel Pereira at UFC 291 on Saturday night, but the fight was scrapped after the Brazilian failed to make weight and "Wonderboy" didn't opt to continue with the bout as planned.
