The UFC returns for its latest offering on Saturday night with UFC Fight Night from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, as No. 4-ranked Jack Hermansson takes on No. 13-ranked Marvin Vettori in middleweight action.
The actual main event had been Hermansson facing rising contender Kevin Holland. But Holland contracted COVID-19 and was subsequently pulled from the show. Vettori was set to take on Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza at UFC 256 on Dec. 12. The UFC switched Vettori to square off with Hermansson, and Holland will fight Souza next weekend.
Hermansson entered the UFC in September 2016 and has complied an 8-3 record with six wins coming via stoppage. After being on the cusp of a title shot before getting derailed by Jared Cannonier in September 2019, Hermannsson rebounded in a big way, notching a first-round submission over former title challenger Kelvin Gastelum in July.
Vettori also entered the UFC in 2016 and has gone 5-2-1. After losing a very close fight to current 185-pound champion Israel Adesanya by split decision in April 2018, Vettori has reeled off three consecutive victories to vault himself into the rankings and be discussed as a legitimate contender.
A victory for Hermansson, and he puts himself onto a concise list of guys who could vie for a title shot. If Vettori can get the win, he puts himself into the top 10 and closer to a championship opportunity at the end of 2021.
