The 2024 F1 season is set to come to an end on Sunday with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Raced at the famous Yas Marina Circuit, the circus arrives in the UAE with the Drivers’ Championship already decided - Max Verstappen the comfortable winner for the fourth season in a row.
The Constructors Championship is however up for grabs with McLaren 21 points ahead of Ferrari. While it is McLaren's to lose, anything can happen. But before we get to race day, we delve into the history on the Yas Marina Circuit.
An astonishing construction timeline
Built on Yas Island, the Yas Marina Circuit took just two years to complete. With a price tag of around $1 billion, this state-of-the-art venue was designed by renowned track architect Hermann Tilke and opened in 2009.
Despite the tight deadline, the circuit incorporated cutting-edge facilities and features that set it apart from other F1 tracks
Millions of colours
The W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island Hotel straddles the circuit, making it a focal point of the Yas Marina experience.
Its exterior features a LED light canopy that can reportedly produce as many as 16million different colours. It goes without saying that this translates into a mesmerising spectacle during night races. It is the only hotel in the world with rooms directly overlooking an F1 track.
High speed straight
The Yas Marina Circuit boasts one of the longest straights in Formula 1, stretching 1.2 kilometres between Turns 5 and 6. The longest on the current race calendar is the 1310m straight at the Miami GP, but this is not far off. The straight offers drivers a high-speed overtaking opportunity, with speeds reaching in excess of 330 km/h.
It is a favourite spot for fans and a critical section for team strategists.
Night races
Yas Marina hosts a unique twilight race, beginning in the late afternoon and transitioning into the evening under floodlights.
The spectacle of a setting sun against the circuit’s vibrant colours makes it a visual masterpiece, offering breathtaking shots for fans and broadcasters alike.
Monte Carlo inspiration
Inspired by the iconic Monaco Grand Prix, Yas Marina Circuit features a harbour section where luxury yachts can dock during the race weekend.
This area has become a hotspot for celebrities, VIPs, and wealthy fans, adding a touch of glamour and exclusivity to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Customisable track configurations
Yas Marina layout can be adapted, with up to five different configurations available for various motorsport events.
Although F1 uses the full 5.281-kilometer Grand Prix layout, other versions cater to endurance racing, smaller-scale competitions, and amateur driving experiences.
