A month after a chippy Milan Derby in which Zlatan Ibrahimovic was ejected, A.C. Milan and Inter Milan square off again — this time with first place in Serie A on the line.
The last meeting was a Coppa Italia quarterfinal match that Inter claimed, 2-1, while trailing Milan in the league standings. Now the situation is reversed, with the Nerazzurri standing alone atop the Serie A table by a single point while their arch-rivals sit in second.
Milan striker Ibrahimovic and Inter's Romelu Lukaku are both in the top three in the Golden Boot race, and their personal battle will be one to watch during Sunday's clash. It was the duo's verbal sparring match that led to Ibrahimovic's red card just before the hour mark of last month's contest, as the 39-year-old had picked up a caution (along with Lukaku) for some unsavoury trash talk prior to receiving a second yellow card for a silly foul against another Inter player.
Forward battle aside, Inter should have the fresher legs as Milan will head into Sunday's match on the heels of a disappointing 2-2 Europa League draw with Red Star Belgrade on Thursday. With Inter rested, leading the league and still holding the bragging rights from last month's Derby della Madonnina, Milan would love nothing more than to get one over on their neighbours.
