Aston Villa's steady ascent continues as the club are fifth in the Premier League standings ahead of this weekend's action.

Villa are actually just three points back of league-leading Manchester City, and their lofty position is an extension of a good spell of form that began last season when they finished seventh and earned a right to qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League.

The team did just that, and they are challenging for the top spot in their group with two matches to go, so life at Villa Park is pretty good.

It could always be better though, and one former player thinks that the club should be looking to make a few additions when the January transfer window opens.

Alan Hutton, who played for Villa throughout most of the 2010s, feels like some smart new signings could help the side as they navigate several different competitions.

“I think slowly but surely they're building up that strength and depth," Hutton told OLBG. "The subs bench is getting better, which is good for them and competition for places is always good.

"But I think there are a couple of areas they could strengthen. Matty Cash needs cover at right back, they had Ashley Young last season but he's now gone. So they'll need to sign someone.

“I love [Ollie] Watkins as a player, but Villa could do with a number nine as competition. I know [Jhon] Duran's there, but he’s raw, a bit rough around the edges.

"He's obviously going to get better, but I think in terms of the squad, at this moment in time, they're in a decent place. One or two extra players can never hurt, but I think if you look at them all over the pitch, they are strong.”
