The Canada and Bayern Munich star was injured in the run-up to the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Alphonso Davies was already ruled out of the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup, but the start of the 2021-22 campaign with Bayern Munich may also be in jeopardy for the Canadian star.

Bayern announced Monday that Davies had suffered an LCL tear to his left ankle and now "faces a period on the sidelines."

The 20-year-old suffered the injury last week while in training in Kansas City with Canada ahead of the Gold Cup and returned to his club side to begin treatment.

While there was no estimate for his return, Bayern's statement said Davies' ankle would be "managed without invasive treatment," suggesting the injury is not serious.

Bayern's new season starts Aug. 6 with a first-round DFB-Pokal match against Bremer SV, followed a week later by a trip to Borussia Mönchengladbach to open the Bundesliga campaign.

Canada kicked off their Gold Cup on Sunday with a 4-1 win over Martinique.
