The former striker thinks he sees the fundamental problem.

Andy Cole has explained the disadvantages of Manchester United’s scattergun approach to appointing managers since Alex Ferguson retired.

After nearly three decades of domestic dominance, and three European trophies, United’s manager stepped down in 2013, and the club has grown ever more chaotic.

United tried David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick and most recently Erik ten Hag in charge.

Apart from occasional seasons when United looked to have a foundation to build upon - which were anyway wasted - the club have struggled on the pitch, with a direction off it generally unclear.

Cole and Ferguson landed several domestic trophies as well as the Champions League together, and the former striker believes that chopping and changing figureheads has result in confusion and underperformance in the transfer market.

Speaking to Betfred, he explained:  “There have been five permanent managers in the ten years since Sir Alex Ferguson departed and they’ve all played a different way and they would have required major changes in their playing staff for each of them to have been successful.”
