The best spot for Eddie Howe is the one he currently occupies, according to former Newcastle United striker Andy Cole.
Howe has been manager at St. James' Park since November 2021, when the Magpies were mired in the relegation zone of the Premier League's standings. The former Bournemouth and Burnley boss spearheaded a turnaround that saw the club qualify for the Champions League just one season later, and the Magpies are now consistent challengers for a top four finish with Howe at the helm.
The club's turnaround has put Howe firmly in the spotlight as a potential England manager, and a reported falling out with Newcastle sporting director Paul Mitchell has only amplified those rumours.
However, Cole doesn't believe a move to international football would be the correct one for Howe at this time, and he has urged the 46-year-old to remain where he is.
“For me, he shouldn’t leave because he’s got an unbelievable job at Newcastle," Cole told Betfred. "He’s got a hell of a lot of backing and whatever the issue is that he has with Paul Mitchell, if they do have one, then that has to be addressed.
"Eddie’s done an unbelievable job, so why would you want to bring somebody in to rock the boat? Eddie’s taken them from a team fighting relegation to competing in the Champions League, but in football, you never know what’s going to happen.
“I’ve not seen any Newcastle United fans calling for his head and I believe that everybody connected with the club is enjoying Eddie being in charge.”
