Two of the most in-form sides in the Premier League clash on Wednesday as Arsenal host Liverpool.
The teams each head into the midweek fixture on the back of a multi-match winning streak, with the Gunners having won their last five league games while the Reds have rung off eight consecutive victories in league play. In fact, the last Arsenal loss came at the hands of Liverpool, albeit in the Carabao Cup when Jurgen Klopp's men ousted the Londoners at the semifinal stage in January.
It was yet another disappointing result for the Gunners against Liverpool, as Arsenal have won just once in the last 18 meetings between the sides.
Wednesday's match is a crucial one for both teams in their respective races — Liverpool can pull to within one point of league-leading Manchester City with a win, while Arsenal can further solidify their hold on fourth place (and the final England-based Champions League berth that goes with it).
For Mikel Arteta, reversing the recent Liverpool jinx is an imperative step towards accomplishing his club's goals.
"I think we played against some top teams and we played against City not long ago and you know the problems that they put in," the Arsenal manager said. "Every week is a test in the Premier League and a very different one, and the challenges that you face in those games are completely different, but [Wednesday] certainly is a team that dominates every aspect of the game, so when that happens you have to be at your best."
Arteta added: "Winning another game in this league always gives you momentum. Being able to beat the most in-form team in the country would be really, really big so that’s the aim [Wednesday]."
