The Premier League kicks off 2022 in fine fashion, as Arsenal hosts Manchester City on New Year's Day.
The teams sit fourth and first in the standings, respectively, but they are worlds apart in terms of expectations. The Gunners have to be pleased at their current place on the league table, given their horrible start to the campaign and how their last few seasons have gone. The London side is one of the hottest teams in the Premier League as it heads into Saturday's match on a four-game winning streak.
However, City's simply on a different level. The Sky Blues have an astounding 15 more points than Arsenal ahead of their clash, and they boast an eight-point cushion at the top of the standings. Pep Guardiola's men have reeled off 10 straight league victories, having outscored the opposition 18-3 over the four most recents wins.
That kind of form can be tough to break, and Arsenal will need to do it without manager Mikel Arteta on the sidelines. Arteta's in isolation in accordance with COVID-19 protocols, leaving his assistants to manage the team against the best side in England.
It'll be a challenge, but Arteta is confident in his coaching staff.
"Well, Albert [Stuivenberg] will be in charge with the rest of the team and depending on which coaches we have available as we had so many issues in that department recently, but everyone will be there trying to help us as much as possible," Arteta said . "We will be in touch, but as well, I want to give them the possibility, the opportunity and the freedom to make decisions on the pitch and to express themselves because it’s completely different to being on that touchline close to the players and the action than being at home. I’m going to be here to support and help in certain moments, but they have to get the momentum the game and communication with the players themselves."
