Arsenal defeated arch rivals Tottenham 2-1 in the North London derby on Sunday, thanks to goals by Martin Odegaard and Alexandre Lacazette.
The Gunners were dominant for long stretches of the match, including most of the first half as Spurs appeared lacklustre and lacking energy despite being the in-form team heading into the contest. Yet, despite Arsenal's bright start, it was Tottenham which took the first-half lead as Erik Lamela hit a world-class Rabona inside the penalty area and through Arsenal star Thomas Partey's legs for a 33rd-minute opener that was very much against the run of play.
Spurs' lead would last for just 11 minutes, however, as Odegaard finished off a nice Arsenal attacking move for the equalizer just before halftime.
The second half started slower than the first, but eventually Arsenal, just like before the break, would again take control of play. Shortly after the hour mark, Lacazette was judged to have been brought down inside the Tottenham box by Davinson Sanchez and awarded a penalty, which he easily finished to give the home side the lead.
Spurs would continue to struggle until Lamela was sent off with 15 minutes remaining for a second yellow card, after which the visitors displayed the kind of urgency and fluidity that was previously missing. However, it was too little, too late from Tottenham as Arsenal survived the nervy final quarter-hour to secure the victory.
