On paper, the first-ever meeting between Atalanta and Paris Saint-Germain should be a one-sided encounter.
After all, PSG is one of the richest clubs in the world and boasts a star-studded lineup featuring the likes of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Angel Di Maria and others. It's one of the most visible collections of soccer players on Earth, whose sole purpose is to lift the Champions League trophy (after claiming seven of the past eight Ligue 1 titles).
On the other side of Wednesday's quarterfinal is Atalanta, the rising Italian club that has finished third in Serie A in consecutive seasons but isn't exactly known as a global powerhouse.
Atalanta's roster doesn't contain the names that ignite the imagination like that of PSG, but the team known as La Dea (The Goddess) seems to have divine intervention on its side as it's the first Champions League debutant to advance to the quarterfinals since Leciester City did so in 2016-17. Escaping the group stage by one point, Atalanta dropped four goals in each of its Round of 16 legs against Valencia en route to an 8-4 aggregate victory, and now it faces its biggest test yet.
Bolstering PSG's hopes is the return of Mbappe, who was expected to miss out due to an ankle injury. The French striker's presence — which is expected to be limited — could provide a huge boost as Mbappe's speed and goal scoring threat could open the game up for Neymar, who needs no assistance in dominating games but would certainly welcome the help.
It could be a long night in Lisbon for Atalanta, but the year 2020 continues to be full of surprises.
