There aren't many teams that can claim to hold the upper hand on Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool, but Atletico Madrid is one of them.
The Rojiblancos have consistently proven to be formidable foes for the Reds, especially in Madrid where Liverpool has never claimed a victory in four tries. More recently, the teams faced off in the last-16 of the 2019-20 UEFA Champions League with Atletico winning the first leg 1-0 at home followed by a 3-2 extra-time victory at Anfield.
Now the teams are among a tough foursome in Group B of the 2021-22 edition — Milan and Porto make up the other two sides in the group — and head into Tuesday's meeting in Madrid occupying the top two spots after two matchdays. Liverpool will put their perfect 2-0-0 start to the group-stage up against a battle-tested Atletico side that is also unbeaten so far (1-1-0).
With Matchdays 3 and 4 mirroring one another, Atletico and Liverpool will play each other in back-to-back matches that may ultimately decide the fate of the group. Such importance is not lost on Klopp.
"Yes, if you win both games against Atletico in that group then it's pretty likely that you go through – that was clear from the beginning, I would say," Klopp said on Monday. "Hopefully we can use the things we learned from the two games we played against them [in 2020], even though they changed a lot since then.
"They play [a] different system, changed a lot of players. So, we face a different but not a weaker animal. They became Spanish champions last year, so that's not an easy thing to do. Some of the core of the players are still together for a while, so they know how to win football games and that's what they will try [on Tuesday]."
