The second leg happens Wednesday, live on DAZN.

The first leg of the Champions League quarterfinal between Manchester City and Atletico Madrid was a frustrating game to watch for City fans. However, Atletico employed their trademark suffocating style to grind out a result at the Etihad Stadium.

The Rojiblancos didn't register a single shot throughout the 90 minutes, instead focusing on defending against City's considerable attacking talent. It nearly worked — a moment of brilliance by Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne created the game's only goal in the 70th minute to give the Sky Blues a slight advantage ahead of Wednesday's second leg in Madrid.

When asked if City could do more to create opportunities for themselves, even in the hostile environs of the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano, Pep Guardiola was sure that they could.

“Yes, we can be better,” the City manager said. “It will be slightly different there than it was in Manchester.

“There will be moments we will have to be ready to defend. They are so intense. They have incredible support for the team and manager.

“We need to create chances. We know Atletico Madrid in the knockout stage is so, so difficult. We will try."

To get the desired result in Spain, Guardiola said his team would have to stick to what's made them a success during his time in Manchester.

“The message will not for one second be different to what we have done all the time," he said.

“Be careful in situations, defend well. Control the transitions, which are really good. All the stuff we prepared - we need to do it as well as possible.

“I trust the players a lot. I know how it works, this world. Things change up and down, positive and negative.

“But we travel there to win the game. That's what we have to do.”
