Barcelona eliminated from Champions League

The club fell 5-2 on aggregate to PSG in the Round of 16.

It's the end of the road for FC Barcelona in the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League.

Despite a superb goal by Lionel Messi in a 1-1 second-leg draw at Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, the La Liga side wasn't able to overturn a heavy first-leg deficit and exits the competition on the back of a 5-2 aggregate loss to the French club.

The result sees Barca exit the Champions League at the Round of 16 stage, which is one round earlier than last year's infamous ouster at the hands of eventual champion Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals. Messi and Co. were eliminated from the 2018-19 Champions League by eventual champion Liverpool in the semifinals, making it two successive years that the Blaugrana have been bounced a round earlier than the previous season.

If the trend holds, then PSG will surely be bolstered by the fact that Barca's previous two exits have been engineered by the teams that went on to win the competition in those years. The Ligue 1 outfit fell to Bayern in last season's Champions League final.
