Barcelona and Juventus have both easily secured their spots in the knockout round of the 2020-21 Champions League, but Tuesday's group-stage finale between the clubs is still of massive interest around the world.
The reason, of course, is the expected participation of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Should both men play in Tuesday's match, it'll mark the first time the icons have gone head-to-head since 2018. Their on-field battles used to be quite frequent, with Messi leading Barca throughout his 17-year career, while Ronaldo was the face of a star-studded Madrid side from 2009 through his 2018 departure for Juve.
Since then, the generational rivalry was put on indefinite hold as both players excelled in parallel domestic competitions.
Now they could face off for what could be the final time — with first place in the group on the line.
There was some doubt about Messi's participation in Tuesday's match as the superstar had been rested for Barca's past two Champions League matches, and the club's situation in La Liga is far more desperate. However, Barca coach Ronald Koeman said Monday that Messi will return to the squad for the final matchday.
"Leo and [Ronaldo] are two fantastic players who've been great to watch for so long," Koeman said. "They are the best of the last 15 years. They have achieved so much success. They are different players but I admire them both. They have given us many great nights and I hope we enjoy them both [on Tuesday]."
This matchup could've happened earlier in the round when the stakes were higher, but Ronaldo was forced to miss Juve's 2-0 defeat to Barca on Oct. 28 while recovering from COVID-19. Messi's penalty kick in stoppage time sealed that victory, and the Blaugrana hold a three-point lead in Group H heading into Tuesday's contest.
Regardless, a Messi vs. Ronaldo matchup is always one to watch even with less on the line. Given their respective ages and club situations, who knows how many more of these we'll get to see.
