Alphonso Davies was already turning heads by the time Bayern Munich visited Chelsea in late February for the first leg of their Round of 16 Champions League clash, but the young Canadian became a bona fide international star with his play during that match.
The 19-year-old converted left back dazzled the Stamford Bridge crowd with his blazing speed and relentless work ethic, helping Bayern to a comprehensive 3-0 victory. Davies' potential was on full display in the lead-up to the game's third goal, as he torched the right side of Chelsea's defence with a half-field run before sending an inch-perfect cross for Robert Lewandowski to tap in.
It was the kind of performance that Canada and Bayern fans had already become accustomed to, but it took his dazzling display in a Champions League contest — in London — to really cement Davies as one of the game's best young players.
Now, nearly five months since his breakout match, Davies will have the opportunity to torch Chelsea again.
The Blues head to Munich for the second leg with a mountain to climb. With a three-goal deficit needing to be overturned, Chelsea will be forced to play an open, attacking style in order to create the kind of chances they need — and that could open large swaths of space for Davies and his teammates to exploit. To add another obstacle, the Londoners will be without the services of Christian Pulisic, who went down with a hamstring injury in last week's FA Cup final after a blistering few weeks that saw the American youngster become arguably the most dangerous player in the Premier League.
With Chelsea manager Frank Lampard expected to throw caution to the wind in hopes of a miracle, and without a potential head-to-head matchup against Pulisic, Davies could be in for another big day.
