Bayern Munich heads into the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League looking every bit the dominant force it was when it claimed the previous season's title.
Die Roten have already claimed two pieces of hardware during the young season — the UEFA Super Cup and the DFL-Super Cup — and besides an uncharacteristic slip against Hoffenheim they are once again the odds-on favourites to win the Bundesliga.
Bayern has scored 17 goals through four matchdays in Germany, led by the unassailable talent of Robert Lewandowski. Last year's top scorer in the Bundesliga and Champions League, Lewandowski has continued to score at will to open the 2020-21 domestic campaign and he'll surely be eager to do more of the same on the European stage.
If Lewandowski was the leading man of the 2019-20 season, then Alphonso Davies was the breakout star. The Canadian teenager became a household name through his exploits on the left flank for Bayern, and he'll be expected to do more of the same this season.
Both men should be in the squad on Wednesday against Atletico Madrid, although Davies hasn't been a mainstay in the Bayern lineup so far this season. According to Bayern coach Hansi Flick, Davies' action has been limited due to the congested schedule brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It’s not easy for a young player like Alphonso Davies because of the many games last season and the short break," Flick said, per Bild. "It’s important that he gets back on track and can bring his strength back into play. But for that he has to have a certain fitness and mental freshness.”
Regardless of whether Davies is in the lineup, Bayern will still be favoured on Matchday 1. As well-coached and stubborn as Atletico has been throughout the years under Diego Simeone, Atletico will step into the Allianz Arena with the second-best roster of the two sides — even with Luis Suarez now suiting up for the Rojiblancos.
