AFC Bournemouth were outplayed on the stat sheet but came up victors anyway as they defeated hosts Burnley on Sunday.

It was the first Premier League victory of 2024 for the Cherries, who also ended a seven-match winless skid across all competitions.

Despite claiming a much-needed three points, the post-match comments from Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola included disappointment in the team's performance for much of the game.

"It is always nice to win," Iraola told BBC Sport. "I think we have played much better games without getting the win but today we really needed it.

"I was not happy with the performance in the first half. Second half we read the situation much better. I think then we were the better team."

While Iraola expressed dissatisfaction with his side's play in the first half, they actually took a 13th-minute lead through Justin Kluivert. Yet Burnley were still confident in possession and looked to create chances often, only to be let down by their finishing.

That changed in the second half, when Bournemouth made some changes and ultimately put the game out of reach with a Antoine Semenyo goal in the 88th minute.

"I didn't like how we played in the first half, we talked at half time how to improve certain things and I think we did it," Iraola said.

"We have been playing well lately but not getting the wins. Maybe we needed a game like this where we were not playing well but got the win."
