This one will be heated.
Just four days after Brighton and Manchester United met in a Premier League match that reignited the VAR debate in England, the two sides will square off again in the Round of 16 of the 2020-21 Carabao Cup.
On Saturday, Brighton thought it had secured a late draw against the visiting Red Devils when Solly March scored an equalizer deep into stoppage time. Unfortunately for the Seagulls, a last-second United corner kick was adjudged to have resulted in a handball inside the Brighton 18-yard box — but only after the referee had blown the final whistle and a VAR review was undertaken.
The ensuing penalty kick was buried with authority by Bruno Fernandes, and United came away with a fortuitous and controversial three points.
Saturday's result obviously left a bad taste in the mouths of the Brighton players, especially as the Seagulls struck the woodwork five times during that match.
United hero Fernandes added to the Brighton ire by rubbing salt in the wounds in his post-match comments, possibly giving the Albion players more motivation to perform in Wednesday's Cup fixture.
“Brighton did very well but maybe because we are not as aggressive as we want. We need to recover more balls, press better, lose less possession," Fernandes said. “Maybe they deserved more. The point is to score goals not hit the bar. Sometimes you have to have some luck.”
Wednesday sees the two sides reconvene in the same venue, as Brighton will once again serve as host. With a spot in the Carabao Cup quarterfinals on the line, and with some very recent bad blood still top of mind, the match promises to deliver some fireworks.
