Canada's journey through the final round of qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup continues this week, with the team setting up shop in Edmonton for two games.

The Canadians will host Costa Rica and Mexico at Commonwealth Stadium in a pair of crucial fixtures that will double as a homecoming for Alphonso Davies, the Edmonton-raised Bayern Munich star who has captured the attention of the nation with his exploits throughout the qualification campaign.

First up for the Canadians is a Friday meeting with the Costa Ricans, who have traditionally been the third-best team in CONCACAF behind perennial powers Mexico and the United States. The Ticos are going through a transition between generations, with a lot of the older guard still around for one more kick at the can before aging out.

The relatively advanced age of the Costa Rican side was on full display the last time they faced off with Canada, in the summer's Gold Cup tournament, with a youthful Canadian side running circles around their opposition en route to a comfortable 2-0 victory.

That match was missing Canada's two biggest stars, Davies and 21-year-old current Ligue 1 Golden Boot leader Jonathan David, both of whom are expected to start in a chilly Commonwealth on Friday.
