The World cup hopes of Canada are over after they were outplayed by a quality Croatian side at the Khalifa International Stadium in Qatar.
Despite starting the tournament impressively against Belgium in a 1-0 defeat, Canada were no match for Croatia as the 2018 finalists made their extra quality and experience count.
Canada made a brilliant start when Alphonso Davies was left unmarked in the box and the Bayern Munich star made no mistake as he headed home.
Any chance of Croatia wilting was quickly extinguished as they responded brilliantly to go in 2-1 at half-time. Andrej Kramaric slotted from a tight angle before Marko Livaja finished well from the edge of the area.
Cananda started the second half positively, but it soon became clear that they were second best to their European opponents. Croatia were able to step up their play and in the 70th minute, Kramaric pounced again to make it 3-1.
Canada tried their best to stay in the game, but Croatia’s extra quality ensured that they stayed in front with something to spare and they compounded Canada’s misery in stoppage time as Majer scored from close range.
Canada’s early exit now means that there’s everything to play for in the final round of games with Belgium likely to require a win against Croatia.
Morocco’s win earlier today against Belgium means they’ll be confident of progressing, but for Canada, it’s a case of playing for pride before they host the tournament with USA and Mexico in four years' time.
