The third round of the 2021-22 Carabao Cup kicks off this week, with the heaviest hitters of English football joining the fray.
Now down to 32 teams, the third round of the tournament welcomes clubs that are active in European competition. That means Chelsea, Leicester City, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and West Ham United — all of which are currently in the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, or Europa Conference League — jump into the action, immediately boosting the visibility and standard of play of the competition as a whole.
Most of the newcomers will be favored to win their respective third-round matches, and (aside from City vs. Wycombe) nowhere is this more true than in Tuesday's Norwich City vs. Liverpool fixture. The teams met earlier this year, in the Premier League season opener, where Liverpool cruised to a 3-0 victory at Carrow Road.
It was a rude re-introduction to the top flight for the Canaries, who now look to exact a measure of revenge against the high-flying Reds. It's a tall task for a Norwich team that has lost all five of its Premier League matches thus far in the young campaign, giving up three or more goals in three of those games.
“One thing we have to do is that we need to defend our own goal better,” Norwich manager Daniel Farke said. “If we concede three goals per game, as an average, we can’t win anything on this level.
“You can argue we were also a bit unlucky and about the quality of the opponents, but the fact is we have conceded too many goals. We have to improve on this, and this is our main topic.
“We need to be harder to play against. We need more steel, and we need to be nastier. We also need a result for the confidence. It is important now to focus on Liverpool, to make sure that we improve. It won’t be that easy [Tuesday] because we will have a few changes as I also want to learn a little bit more about my team in order to go forward, but I want to be there with a good performance and a good result.”
