The Reds captain was integral in their win.

It doesn't get any better than scoring a header to win a cup final, and Virgil van Dijk thought he did so twice on Sunday.

Van Dijk and Liverpool defeated Chelsea 1-0 to win the Carabao Cup, with the experienced defender's 118th-minute header the difference between the sides. His late strike was actually the second time Van Dijk found the back of the net by way of a powerful header, as he nodded home in the second half but saw the goal called off due to an off-the-ball infraction by a teammate that was spotted by VAR.

Regardless, the Dutch centre-back got his moment as he led the Reds to their first trophy as team captain, and after the match he explained what it meant to both him and his side.

"So much," Van Dijk told Sky Sports. " All the young boys on the pitch, in extra time. It's incredible, I'm so proud of the team.

"Intense game for both sides, they had chances, we had chances. Amazing. First trophy as Liverpool captain, it's all for the fans so let's enjoy it."

When asked if he's savouring the moment given manager Jurgen Klopp's impending departure from the team, he said, "You should always savour the good moments, this is definitely one of them.

"Listen, we will never take things for granted and you see today it could have been the other way as well that we lost but we did a job, even with all the problems we have had before the game.

"I'm so proud, proud to be part of this club and especially proud of the boys."
