Carlisle United scored both of the goals during regular play of their EFL League Two playoff final against Stockport County on Sunday, so it's only fitting that they would be the side to win promotion.

The teams required a penalty shootout to determine which of the two would advance to League One next season, but it was two Carlisle players who scored during the 90 minutes.

Jon Mellish experienced every defender's nightmare scenario in a final as he scored the game's opening goal in his own team's net in the 34th minute, giving Stockport a lead they wouldn't relinquish for nearly an hour. It wasn't until the late stages of the match that the Blues would find the leveller, through Omari Patrick in the 84th minute, to force extra time.

The additional 30 minutes of play solved nothing, sending the teams into a penalty shootout.

After the first attempt from each side was successfully converted, Stockport's Ryan Rydel had his effort saved. The opportunity for vindication now a distinct possibilty for Mellish, he was next to step up to the spot.

The 25-year-old scored on his attempt to give his side a lead they never relinquished.
