After a short break, the UEFA Champions League is back.
The back half of the group stage kicks off this week as teams look to solidify their spots in the knockout round. A number of groups are on the verge of being decided and could be all-but done by the end of Matchday 4. The likes of Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Liverpool and Barcelona could each have one foot (or more) in the Round of 16 with victories this week, as they've all started with perfect records through the first three matches.
Other groups haven't seen that kind of separation at the top just yet, giving most of the remaining teams lots to play for over the next three weeks.
The biggest factor of the back half of the group stage could be fixture congestion, as every team will be juggling midweek Champions League matches with weekend domestic games until the second week of December. That puts roster management at a premium as coaches try to remain competitive in multiple competitions while not allowing their players to burn out.
To that end, Barca manager Ronald Koeman has announced that Lionel Messi and Frenkie de Jong have not travelled to Ukraine for the team's match against Dynamo Kyiv on Tuesday. The pair — along with injured defender Gerard Pique — have played the most minutes of the club's outfield players this season, so Koeman determined that Tuesday's fixture would be a good time to give them a rest.
Barca's spot in the knockouts is nearly assured, which allows Koeman the luxury of leaving Messi and de Jong at home, but it wouldn't be surprise to see other managers utilize the same tactic in future matches as teams cement their places in the Round of 16.
