The group stage of the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League is over, with a few surprises among the 16 teams that have advanced to the knockout phase of the annual competition.
While the likes of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Barcelona and Juventus are perennial participants in the Round of 16 and were expected to make it this far, the continued participation of Borussia Monchengladbach and RB Leipzig were unforeseen.
In the case of Leipizig, which made it all the way to the semis last season, its inclusion in the knockouts is only surprising when taking its group into consideration. The Red Bulls finished second in Group H to PSG and advanced over traditional power Manchester United, which fell to third place on the final matchday despite having the best odds of advancement just a week earlier.
For 'Gladbach, this is rarified air.
Regardless of their previous experiences, all 16 clubs will fancy their chances of moving on. The rapid-fire nature of the group stage is now in the past, giving teams more time to rest and recuperate between domestic fixtures.
Here's everything you need to know about this season's Champions League knockout phase.
