Timo Werner scored a rare goal as Thomas Tuchel's men moved into fourth in the Premier League.

Timo Werner scored his first goal in 14 games as Chelsea beat Newcastle in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge.

Newcastle made the journey south with Dwight Gayle filling in for Callum Wilson, who remained unavailable due to injury. January loan signing Joe Willock retained his place in central midfield.

Chelsea had their own injury problems to contend with when Tammy Abraham was withdrawn in the first half, replaced by French veteran Olivier Giroud. Werner set him up for the opener when his cross was deflected into the former Arsenal striker's path.

Eight minutes later, Werner put an end to his drought as he forced home the ball at the back post.

Chelsea's win takes them into fourth place on 42 points, with Newcastle in 17th on 25 points.

West Ham is just behind Chelsea, on goal difference, after they defeated Sheffield United 3-0. Loan signing Jesse Lingard was at the heart of their attacking play, and it was a foul on the Manchester United midfield that earned them a first-half penalty that Declan Rice converted.

Issa Diop added a second before the hour mark, and Ryan Fredericks completed the win with a goal deep into added time. The defeat leaves Sheffield United stranded in 20th, 14 points off safety.
