Chelsea's busy 2022 continues this week with the team's return to the Champions League, where French champion Lille awaits in the round of 16.
The Blues lifted the FIFA Club World Cup last week, and after a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday, they sit third in the Premier League. Chelsea will remain juggling competitions as the club is still alive in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, in addition to the regular Premier League grind.
Throw in their ongoing defence of the Champions League title, and things are still very hectic for Thomas Tuchel's men.
However, contesting multiple tournaments should be considered a sign of success, the Chelsea manager said.
"We come now from a period with a lot of different competitions, and it just continues like this, we go straight back to the Champions League and then to the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, so there are another three matches which are not in the Premier League," Tuchel said immediately following Chelsea's victory against Crystal Palace.
"So it is a bit strange, and that is what we demand from ourselves, and it helps if you have a win like this. It helps with the belief and the atmosphere around the team, and we will need a top performance on Tuesday against Lille."
As noted, Lille's the defending Ligue 1 champion, although the 2021-22 season isn't going all that well for "Les Dogues." The team is in 11th place after 25 matches played, and it would take a Herculean effort to even get back into European competition based on league play. That places extra onus on Lille to succeed in the Champions League, where an unlikely run to the title would get the team back into the top club tournament on the continent.
